Viennese educational opportunities – “Sprachenreich”

The everyday lives of many pupils are characterized by multilingualism. Children and young people speak the languages spoken in their countries of origin, the countries of origin of their parents or grandparents. If we look at the situation at Viennese elementary school, over 50 percent of pupils are multilingual. The aim must be to ensure that language skills are well developed in all languages. At the same time, it is essential that the children are aware that language skills are essential resources. The aim of the program is to raise awareness and interest in language skills.

Language skills are the basis for many things. They are essential for a successful educational and professional career and also have a significant influence on social life. They are an essential identity-forming factor.

In workshops, all the languages that pupils bring with them are seen as a resource and an advantage. This leads to the promotion of multilingualism on an individual and social level. The aim is to raise awareness of plurilingualism, of languages, of the differences between them, of the development of receptive skills and communicative competencies and also of finding one’s way in everyday multilingual situations. The aim of this project is to develop language awareness together with the pupils and to explore the opportunities offered by language resources.
