Multilingualism meets school
In cooperation with the primary school in Berndorf, language awareness measures are integrated into lessons and everyday school life. The long-term goal is to develop an overall concept of language education for primary schools that combines research and practice.
The term “language awareness” (LA) encompasses explicit knowledge of language, language awareness and language sensitisation in using, learning and teaching a language. The implementation of a language awareness concept brings about explicit reflection on different languages, especially on one’s own first and second language, and also draws attention to language as an object. The promotion of multilingualism concerns all learners and school subjects. By means of the LA approach, children are encouraged to reflect on and think about language(s) and to compare them. This, in turn, supports language acquisition.
